| Brief Description |
This walk crosses the Holcombe Firing Range. The MOD website should show days when firing is taking place but it hasn't been updated since June 2025 (the MOD is not known as a model of efficiency, let's hope they can do better in the event of conflict!). In the event that there is firing we will take an alternative, shorter route. From the car park we make a gradual ascent along Moorbottom Road, this is a fairly smooth surface as far as the last dwelling and then becomes somewhat rocky. After about a kilometre we bear left and drop into the valley of Red Brook and climb out past Longshaw Head and turn to cross Black Moss and ascend to Bull Hill, the highest point of the walk. We then descend on a grassy path to reach Moor Road. We follow this for about a kilometre before climbing up to Peel Tower. From here it is a steep descent on a rocky track, taking us back to the car park. |
