Brief Description

Starting from the car park near Gargrave Village Hall, we follow the Pennine Way north and soon enter the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Crossing pastureland we reach the pretty River Aire. We follow the river to Airton and, here, leave the Pennine Way. A short ascent takes us to the little hamlet of Calton; from here the walk takes us over undulating pastureland to Cowper Cote. From here we descend to the road, skirt round Winterburn and follow the quiet lane to Friar's Head with its superb Elizabethan farmhouse. We leave the road and, passing between woods, we begin to drop down to Eshton, near Gargrave. Our final path into Gargrave is via the canal towpath. The walk is varied, offering meadows, pasture, lane walking, woods, river, great views and historic buildings, good paths and little mud.
