Brief Description

We start in the village, which used to be a major distribution centre on the canal network in the 19 Century, now a base for canal leisure traffic at the nearby Marina. The route begins on a lane but soon goes across farmland to reach Centenary Wood. Here is the site of the Parsonage, the home of Lewis Carroll, (with a trail taking you over to Daresbury Church). We retrace our steps briefly, leaving the road by Brook Farm, to walk across meadows and pick up the Delamere Way, eventually reaching the Trent and Mersey Canal. The route follows the canal, passing locks at Tunnel Top. The route leaves the canal at Dutton but we join it again to continue back to the start in Preston on the Hill village. An easy, level walk across farmland, using lanes, towpath, tracks and footpaths with a short stretch along a road that has a grass verge. There are stiles and gates, but this is Cheshire!
