Brief Description

A varied and interesting though a corner of Lancashire's lost industrial heritage, from the car park we cross the Leeds and Liverpool canal passing through Firs Lane to Fir Tree Flash, we then head west across Bickershaw Country Park the site of the former Bickershaw Colliery one of the last mines to close in the Wigan coalfield. Heading north we pass Bickershaw village through re-generated wooded and open countryside, before we swing south for home visiting Diggle Flash and re-crossing the country park in a southerly direction this time to Plank Lane and back over the canal to the car park.

Directions to Pennington Flash:

Turn Right from the A56 onto the M60 and travel clockwise (north) to exit at JT 13 for Worsley/Leigh. At the slip road roundabout turn first left onto the A572 (Leigh road) to Boothstown. In Boothstown pass the post office on your right and then turn left into Chaddock Lane, sign posted Leigh A572 and Liverpool (A580) to reach the A580 East Lancashire Road where you turn left towards Liverpool. Continue along the A580 for 5 miles and turn right onto the A579 (A572), sign posted Pennington Flash and Leigh Sports Village and in approx. 0.8 miles at the crossroads traffic lights turn left onto the A572 sign posted Lowton and Pennington Flash and the entrance to Pennington Flash is on your right in 250m
