Brief Description --------- This walk starts from the Barrow Bridge conservation area and goes up to the Winter Hill mast using paths less trodden. There is a little road walking in the early stages but due to current road closures traffic will be very light. The route goes up to Colliers Row Road and then round the side of Brownstones Quarry and follows farm tracks up to Coal Pit Road, from where we break out onto Access Land. We then follow the line of Dean Ditch up to the mast. From here we descend down the road until we can pick up the line of a disused tramway down to Hole Bottom, the site of a former brick and tile works. This is probably the best spot for a lunch break. From here we descend down the valley of Dean Brook to the edge of Walker Fold Woods where a little uphill section is taken due to a current footpath closure, reaching the road at Walker Fold car park. A little road walking takes us to a footpath along Dakin's Brook and back to Barrow Bridge. The first half of this walk is pretty much all uphill but the gradients are mostly moderate and the second half is all downhill apart from the little kicker by the woods.
